The town of Bernau

The town of Bernau

Where modern meets medieval

As one of the termini of theBerlinS-Bahn (urban railway), Bernau is just a stone’s throw from the capital. This small town captivates visitors with its extremes – the attempt to blend medieval and modern in its architecture. Walks along the restored city walls, which completely enclose Bernau’s centre, with the stone gate and the “hunger tower”, the Kantorhaus as the oldest dwelling, the museum in the Henkerhaus (executioner’s house) and the late-Gothic St. Marienkirche (churchofSt. Mary) take us back hundreds of years. And so does the Hussite Festival on the second weekend of June every year. This is when the whole town and thousands of guests celebrate the (unsuccessful) besiegement of Bernau by the Hussites in 1432.

However, a walk through the town centre transports us back to the 1970s, when large chunks of the crumbling old town were torn down and replaced by buildings made with precast concrete slabs. Bernau was one of the GDR’s four model towns in which prefabricated “plattenbau” buildings were adapted to fit small-town structures and erected in old town centres to counter the housing shortage. Visitors interested in architecture can have a look and form their own opinion of this urban planning experiment, which was controversial but is now gaining acceptance. Such people will also find worthwhile a trip to the heritage-protected ensemble of theFederalSchoolof the German Trade Union Confederation (ADGB), which was built between 1928 and 1930. The campus, which bears the name of its architect Hannes Meyer, is now used for seminars. Along with Bauhaus Dessau, the collection of buildings is considered the most significant example of Bauhaus architecture.
