The Town of Eberswalde

The Town of Eberswalde

Forest in its name and industrial culture at its heart

Eberswaldetranslates as “the forest of the boars” – which is highly appropriate. Firstly, the town is surrounded by expansive and partly protected woodland. Secondly, it is home to the botanical garden and arboretum (Forstbotanische Garten), which was created in 1830 and contains some 1,200 trees and shrubs. Animal lovers will be enthralled byEberswalde’s zoo. It started as a small collection of animals in 1928 and has evolved into an internationally renowned zoo with 1,500 species. What’s more, you can also get married here, have your photo taken in your wedding regalia next to your favourite animal and round off the best day of your life by adopting an animal.

It’s worth investigating the industrial heart of the town. District names such as Eisenspalterei (iron mill), Kupferhammer (copper forge) and Messingwerk (brass foundry) remind us of the major roleEberswaldeplayed in the industrialization ofPrussia. Until reunification, crane and pipe construction, rolling mills and other large firms dictated the rhythm of the town. Traditional industry, now reduced to its core or razed altogether, has freed up large areas. In some of them – such as the Familiengarten (family garden) created for the state horticultural show in 2000  – you can trace 300 years of industrial heritage and enjoy the panorama view from the assembly crane.

Historical points of interest can be discovered in the centre, with remains of the city walls, the squares at Nagelplatz and Richterplatz or the former Adler-Apotheke (“eagle pharmacy”) in the town’s oldest half-timbered house, which is now a museum. Renovations have been underway since 1992 and the urban structure has been enhanced with aesthetically discerning and sustainable buildings like the Paul Wunderlich House, where the district administration is located.
